Professor Chong Tow Chong
SUTD President
Professor Chong Tow Chong was appointed President of SUTD in April 2018. He had been SUTD’s founding Provost since 2010, where he played an instrumental role in steering the strategic development and operationalisation of SUTD. Mr Jonathan Kua

Mr Jonathan Kua has almost 30 years of experience in both public and private sectors. Prior to joining SUTD, he was Senior Vice President & Head, Group Sustainability at ST Engineering. He previously held roles in Group Strategy and Technology Planning. Mr Kua spent more than half his career with the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB). Professor Tai Lee Siang

Professor Tai Lee Siang was a pioneer trustee member on the board of SUTD since 2009 till July 2021. Prior to joining SUTD as Head of Pillar, Prof Tai was Executive Director/Communications & Engagement (C&E) at BCA where he oversaw the BuildSG cluster to transform the construction industry in workforce capabilities, partnership and collaboration as well as internationalisation. Dr Zhao Zhenxing
Lecturer, Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (HASS)
Dr Zhao studied at Beijing Normal University where he received dual bachelor’s degrees in Ancient Chinese history and English; and did his doctoral work at the National University of Singapore. At SUTD, he teaches courses on the humanities core curriculum, Chinese fiction, Chinese poetry, Chinese Landscape Design and Asian philosophy. (Full profile)

Professor Tony Quek
Head of Pillar (ISTD), Director (Future Communications R&D Programme)
Professor Tony Quek received the BE and ME degrees in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology. At Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), he earned the PhD in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. At SUTD, Prof Quek is also the Chair Professor for the Cheng Tsang Man Professorship, where he hopes to advance both the academic and research excellence at the Information Systems Technology and Design pillar. Assistant Professor Nilanjan Raghunath

Assistant Professor Raghunath is an AHE Fellow (2020) and has a higher education teaching certificate from the Harvard Derek Bok Center (2020). Her research interests include Sociology of Work and Social Stratification in the 4th Industrial Revolution. Assistant Professor Gornall gained his PhD in Asian Studies from the University of Cambridge in 2013. His research focuses on the intellectual and cultural history of Buddhism in South and Southeast Asia. Dr Edwin Koh currently serves on the review committee of the United States National Academy of Engineering (NAE) Grand Challenges Scholars Program (GCSP) and is the founding chair of the International Conference on Advanced Design Research and Education. Assistant Professor Setsuko Yokoyama received her doctorate in English from the University of Maryland in 2020, and is one of the inaugural graduates of its Digital Studies in the Arts and Humanities programme. Her current research investigates a colonial history of “Visible Speech” and how it intersects with linguistic imperialism, scientific racism, and technosolutionism. (Full profile)

Associate Professor Foong Shaohui
Associate Head of Pillar (EPD) & Co-Director (Dyson-SUTD Innovation Studios)
Associate Professor Foong Shaohui is currently the principal investigator for the Aerial Innovation Research (AIR) Laboratory @ SUTD and has significant expertise in unmanned systems and robotics and works closely with the Ministry of Defence Singapore (MINDEF) on developing intelligent micro spherical ground robots (Project STARS) and nature-inspired aerial crafts (Project MONOCO) which adapts the dispersal mechanism of maple seeds to achieve efficient flight. Assistant Professor Andrew Yee

Assistant Professor Yee’s current work examines youth digital media use, where his team is using screenomes to better understand and dissect smartphone use. He is also working on understanding what aspects of media use contribute to preschoolers’ school readiness. Dr Khoo Xiaojuan

Dr Khoo Xiaojuan obtained her PhD in biomedical engineering from Boston University, where she developed novel peptide-based coatings for rapid modification of biomaterial surfaces for orthopedic implant applications. She then moved to MIT to pursue her postdoctoral research under the supervision of Dr Daniel Kohane and Dr Robert Langer. Associate Professor Tan U-Xuan has been with SUTD since 2012 where he is designing an algorithm for design of compliant mechanism. He is also actively involved in designing pedagogy and activities that enable students to learn better. Prior to that, he conducted his post-doctorate research with Professor Jaydev Desai at University of Maryland, College Park, where he designed an MRI-compatible robotic system for breast biopsy.
